Our Classroom January 20

We celebrated Meghan’s birthday today.  Her birthday is tomorrow January 21.

We worked on exchanging ones for tens and adding numbers during math.

We read to our second grade buddies.

I have included a few pictures from our fifth grade buddies day last week.

We do not have school on Monday, January 23.

Our Classroom January 17

We celebrated Jordyn’s half birthday today.  Her birthday is in the warm summer on July 16.

Today, students worked very hard on the district’s common assessment for math.  We are almost finished with it.  We will be working on it tomorrow. Students do not have a home link sheet this evening.

Students have new library books.  Today was the first day students were able to check out two books.  Mrs. Stevens and Mrs. McLevish highly encourage students to check out one nonfiction book and one fiction book.  They also highly recommend to students to check out books that are appropriate for first grade. 

Tomorrow, there will be testing in the library all day, so if your child forgot to return his/her book, we will not be able to exchange books tomorrow.  Hopefully, Thursday the library will be back to the normal schedule and we will remember.

We will be taking our reading tests tomorrow in the morning.  Students will be tested on sounds and reading.  Both types of tests are timed.

Our Classroom January 13

We celebrated Sofia’s half birthday.  Her birthday is on July 14.  As one student said, “I hope it doesn’t snow on Sofia’s birthday!”  It has been crazy weather this year.

We read a short book about Dr. King yesterday and watched a short video about him today.  Students completed a project based on his vision with their fifth grade buddies on Thursday.  Hopefully, I will remember the cord for my camera to post those pictures.

In math, we talked about the signs < (less than) and > (greater than).  We compared numbers and used the new signs.  We also played a game with base ten blocks that helped students work on exchanging 10 cubes for 1 long.  This will help when regrouping is needed.

Our Classroom January 11

Wow! What happened to our mild January temperatures?  Please encourage/remind your child to bring winter coats and outdoor clothes to school tomorrow.  We will need it for recess.

Today, students practiced seeing numbers represented in base ten blocks.  We will continue to work on place value.

Students also took a subtraction test during our math time.

It appeared Mrs. Odegaard had the class running in Physical Education class.  They were quite tired, thirsty and red after class.

We are really trying to work on polite social behavior in our classroom-using kind words, kind voices, and kind expressions, taking turns talking (not interrupting), being quiet when others need time to concentrate, being patient and understanding.

Our Classroom January 9

Welcome back form the weekend.

Most students were able to check out a new book during the library part of Cybrary today.  If your child forgot his/her book, please send it tomorrow and I will try to remember to send him/her to the library to get a new book. 

During out math time students took the Unit 4 math test.  Since we did not have a new lesson, there is no math home link sheet this evening.  I did send home the family letter for our next unit.  We will be working on place value as well as basic facts.  The family letter provides some activities and games you may interested in doing at home.

We also made our graph about our data from December (finally) and tried to write two sentences about events from December.  It is great to see some of the progress students are making in this area.

Remember tomorrow is a two hour late start.

Our Classroom January 6

Today, we celebrated Grace’s birthday.

We were able to read with our second grade friends in Mr. Mathern’s classroom.

We are working on setting a goal for 2012.

We have been reading many books about winter and snow.  Hopefully, all of our positive thinking and reading will bring some snow!

Students have been working hard on writing numbers on their number scrolls.  Thank you to all the families who have recycled their paper towel rolls and gift wrapping rolls to this project.  We now have enough for everyone!

We have been working hard on our “fact power” in math.  We are trying to memorize the double facts (2+2, 3+3, 4+4, 5+5, 6+6, 7+7, 8+8, and 9+9).  This will help us begin to memorize the doubles +1 facts (2+3, 3+4, 4+5, 5+6, 6+7, 7+8, 8+9).  We also continue to work on the sums of ten facts as well as the facts that add 0, 1, 2, and 3.

Today, we looked at many subtraction facts, too!

Continue to encourage practice with these facts as well as reading and writing.

Our Classroom January 4

We are back together and working hard and celebrating our classmates!

Yesterday, we celebrated Ben’s birthday.  Today, we celebrated Ethan’s birthday.  On Friday, we celebrate Grace’s birthday.  It is fun to see how excited students get for their own birthday as well as their classmates’ birthdays.

We do try to get some work done between the celebrations.  We are working on number writing in math with our number scroll project.  We continue to practice adding, subtracting, counting coins, and telling time.

We do need about ten more rolls from paper towels or gift wrapping for this project.  If you have one or two, please send them to school.

With our birthdays, we have been working on writing.  Many students are becoming more comfortable with writing.  Encourage your child to write a little every day.

Finally, thank you for encouraging your child to write a thank you note to me.  It is a great activity for many reasons.

Our Classroom December 23

We had a busy and fun week.

We were able to celebrate Isabelle’s birthday (December 28) on Thursday and Kale’s birthday (December 30) today.  We wish both of them a fun day!

We were able to relax and have some fun today.  We began the day with a name find puzzle and some hot chocolate.  We had some to play then have snacks and a movie.

I hope all of you have a Merry Christmas and a wonderful 2012!

Our Classroom December 19

Today, we celebrated Parker’s birthday!

We also “traveled” to India to begin learning about a holiday named Diwali.  Tomorrow, we travel to Mexico!

We worked on an addition assessment today during math.  Students do not have a home link sheet today.

We are also working on a very special project during the day.

Our Classroom December 16

It has been a busy week.

I am sorry I missed Wednesday’s update.

We are beginning to learn about holidays and cultures around the world.  On Monday, students will learn about India and a fall holiday called Dewali/Divali.

In math we learned about the terms “a quarter to the hour” and “a quarter past the hour.”  We continue to measure as well as add and subtract.
